If you’ve been following RIBUS’s clean label excipient series, you already know that Nu-FLOW® handles anticaking in standard dry applications and Nu-SORP™ tackles high-oil and high-moisture formulas. But there’s a third challenge that every supplement manufacturer working in oral solid dosage forms eventually faces: binding.
Tablets need to hold together. Capsule blends need adequate bulk density to fill the shell correctly. And when your brand is committed to clean label or certified organic, the conventional answer — Hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) — creates a label problem. HPC is synthetic, non-certifiable as organic, and increasingly out of step with what clean label consumers and certification bodies expect.
Nu-BIND™ was developed to solve exactly that problem.
The Binding Challenge in Clean Label Formulation
Binders are essential in oral solid dosage manufacturing. In tablet production, a binder holds compressed powder into a cohesive tablet that survives handling and shipping without crumbling — while still disintegrating quickly once consumed. In capsule filling, binders can improve bulk density, which determines how much active ingredient actually fits in the shell.
HPC has been the go-to synthetic binder for decades because it works: it produces hard tablets with acceptable friability and adequate disintegration times. But when a brand needs its formula to be USDA Organic certified, Non-GMO Project Verified, or simply free from synthetic excipients, HPC is a blocker.
Until Nu-BIND, clean label formulators either accepted performance compromises or couldn’t certify their finished product as organic. Nu-BIND changes that equation.
Introducing Nu-BIND™
Nu-BIND™ is a natural, pre-mix binder designed specifically for oral solid dosage forms — tablets and capsules. Introduced in November 2018, it was engineered as a direct alternative to synthetic binders like HPC, providing comparable binding performance while qualifying for clean label and organic certification.
Nu-BIND is available in both Organic and Natural grades. It labels as “Gum Fiber Blend” — with the full declaration reading: Guar Gum, Gum Arabic, Agave Fiber, Rice Fiber and Agave Syrup. This makes it compatible with USDA Organic certified production and conventional clean label formulations alike.
The Performance Data: How Nu-BIND Compares to HPC
To evaluate Nu-BIND’s performance against HPC, independent testing was conducted by Biogrund on a single-station tablet press at lab scale. Tablets were produced as 10mm biconvex rounds at 25 kN compression force, then evaluated across three key quality parameters: hardness, friability, and disintegration time.
Tablet Hardness
Hardness was measured in Newtons according to Ph. Eur. 2.9.8 (resistance to crushing). Results at multiple use levels:
| Formulation | Tablet Hardness (N) |
|---|---|
| 3% w/w HPC | ~180 N |
| 5% w/w HPC | ~200 N |
| 3% w/w Nu-BIND | ~160 N |
| 5% w/w Nu-BIND | ~180 N |
| No binder (100% base) | ~140 N |
At 5% w/w, Nu-BIND delivers hardness equivalent to 3% HPC. Both Nu-BIND levels produced tablets substantially harder than the no-binder control — demonstrating that Nu-BIND is actively contributing to tablet integrity, not just acting as a filler.
Friability and Disintegration
Compressed tablets were also tested for friability (Ph. Eur. 2.9.7) and disintegration time (Ph. Eur. 2.9.1):
| Formulation | Friability (%) | Disintegration Time |
|---|---|---|
| 5% w/w HPC | 0.14% | 7 minutes |
| 5% w/w Organic Nu-BIND | 0.17% | 2 minutes |
Both formulations meet pharmaceutical-grade friability standards (the industry threshold is typically ≤1%). The results are essentially equivalent for this critical quality attribute.
Where Nu-BIND genuinely outperforms HPC is disintegration time: tablets with Nu-BIND disintegrate in 2 minutes versus 7 minutes for HPC — more than 3× faster. For formulators where disintegration speed matters to the end-user experience, this is a meaningful advantage, not just a clean label trade-off.
The Biogrund conclusion: Nu-BIND improves tablet hardness and friability to a level comparable to HPC, while ensuring significantly faster disintegration.
Nu-BIND in Capsules: An Unexpected Benefit
Nu-BIND’s utility isn’t limited to tablets. Capsule manufacturers have discovered a particularly valuable application: improving bulk density to eliminate pre-compaction steps.
A common challenge in capsule filling is that low-density blends don’t pack efficiently into the shell. Historically, manufacturers would add a pre-compaction stage to the blend to achieve greater bulk density — a step that adds time, cost, and yield loss.
Here’s how one contract manufacturer, a RIBUS Certified Contract Manufacturer (CCM) member, described their experience:
“We found greatest success where volume considerations limited our formulation options… Once we were able to introduce the Nu-BIND material to the blend, we were able to not only eliminate the compaction step, but were able to save approximately 7% of the capsule space by adding just 3% of Nu-BIND to the blend.”
Eliminating a manufacturing step reduces production time and cost. And saving 7% of capsule space by adding only 3% Nu-BIND means more room for active ingredients — a direct formulation win in capsule products where space is always at a premium.
What Customers Are Saying
The performance data is validated by formulators who’ve made the switch in production:
On tablets and lozenges:
“After several lab trials and a demo run, we have successfully replaced HPC with Nu-BIND and will incorporate Nu-BIND in future lozenge production.”
— Cara, R&D, Effervescent Producer, USA
On certified organic production:
“We would not be able to make these certified-organic products without Nu-MAG (and in the case of one product, Nu-BIND).”
— Jeremy, R&D, Contract Manufacturer, USA (RIBUS CCM Member)
The certified organic use case is particularly significant. Nu-BIND is the only organic-certified binder many formulators can use when a product requires both a binder and an organic declaration — making it not just a clean label preference, but a functional necessity for organic supplement lines.

When Nu-BIND Belongs in Your Formula
Nu-BIND is the right choice when:
- You’re manufacturing tablets or compressed lozenges and need to replace HPC with a clean label or organic-certified binder
- Your product needs USDA Organic certification and you can’t use synthetic binders
- You’re filling hard-shell capsules with low-density blends and currently using a pre-compaction step you’d like to eliminate
- Your brand requires Non-GMO Project Verification throughout the formula
- You need faster disintegration as a formulation goal without sacrificing hardness or friability
Nu-BIND isn’t a drop-in replacement at the same use rate as HPC in every formula — some optimization will be required, as with any excipient transition. But the Biogrund data and real-world manufacturer experience confirm that the performance parity is achievable, and the label and certification advantages are immediate.
The Complete Clean Label Excipient Toolkit
Nu-BIND completes RIBUS’s clean label excipient lineup for oral solid dosage manufacturers:
- Nu-FLOW® — Clean label flow agent and anticaking for standard dry applications
- Nu-MAG® — Clean label lubricant for tablet and capsule production
- Nu-SORP™ Oil — Clean label oil absorber for high-oil formulations
- Nu-SORP™ Water — Clean label moisture management for hygroscopic ingredients
- Nu-BIND™ — Clean label binder for tablets and capsules
Together, these ingredients make it possible to formulate a complete oral solid dosage product — from powder blending through compression or encapsulation — without a single synthetic excipient on the label.
For brands committed to clean label throughout their supply chain, that’s not just a marketing advantage. It’s the difference between a product that can carry organic certification and one that can’t.
